Computerized X-ray Microtomography Observations and Fluid Flow Measurements of the Effect of Effective Stress on Fractured Low Permeability Porous Media

چکیده
This work shows the observed changes in sample permeability and fracture geometry that occur within a fractured piece of low permeability shale with different effective stress gradients applied to the plug sample. These observations were made using an in-situ micro-CT fluid flow imaging apparatus with a carbon fibre Hassler-type core holder. Changes within the preferential fluid flow path under different stress regimes as well as physical changes to the fracture geometry are reported. Lattice-Boltzmann single phase permeability flow simulations were performed on the extracted flow paths and compared to experiment permeability measurements. Experimental flow measurements showed significant changes in the permeability of the fractured system with varying stress states. Imaged fracture apertures were also used in simple parallel plate flow calculations, and compared to results from fluid flow simulations on segmented sample void space and experimental fluid flow measurements.

Study of Two Phase Fluid Flow in Water Wet Reservoir Rocks by Using X-Ray In situ Saturation Monitoring
Displacement of oil and water in porous media of reservoir rocks is described by relative permeability curves, which are important input data for reservoir performance simulation and drive mechanism studies. Many core studies, such as multiphase relative permeability, capillary pressure and saturation exponent determination, depend on the volume fractions of multiphase flui...

Simulating fluid flow at micro level is an ongoing problem. Simplified macroscopic flow models like Darcy’s law is unable to estimate fluid dynamic properties of porous media. The digital sample reconstruction by high resolution X-ray computed tomography scanning and fluid-dynamics simulation, together with the increasing power of super-computers, allow to carry out pore-scale simulations throu...
متن کاملExperimental Investigation of the Permeability and Inertial Effect on Fluid Flow through Homogeneous Porous Media
The value of the permeability in fluid flow through porous media is important for process investigation. In low Reynolds number, the classic Darcy’s law is suitable for simulation of fluid flow. In this paper, an experimental study for evaluation of preformed fiber permeability has been done. Also, the deviations from the classical Darcy law by experimental and numerical simulation of the N...
متن کاملA Novel Integrated Approach to Modelling of Depletion-Induced Change in Full Permeability Tensor of Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
More than half of all hydrocarbon reservoirs are Naturally Fractured Reservoirs (NFRs), in which production forecasting is a complicated function of fluid flow in a fracture-matrix system. Modelling of fluid flow in NFRs is challenging due to formation heterogeneity and anisotropy. Stress sensitivity and depletion effect on already-complex reservoir permeability add to the sophistication. Horiz...
متن کاملX-Ray in-situ saturation monitoring, an aid to study relative permeability in water-wet carbonate rocks
The simultaneous flow of oil and water in porous media is described by relative permeability curves, mainly derived from laboratory experiments. Relative permeability is of paramount importance in predicting reservoir production performance and drive mechanisms and its value depends largely on the volume fraction of fluids present in the test samples. Nowadays X-ray scanners are one of the most...
